Biography
Ryan C. Smith earned his Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from Lehigh University (Bethlehem, PA) in 2015. His dissertation focused on increasing the recovery of inland brackish water desalination plants using a hybrid ion exchange/reverse osmosis process. Next, he joined Temple University (Philadelphia, PA) as a postdoctoral researcher where he investigated the selective destruction and removal of natural organic matter from water. In June 2016, he joined Duke University (Durham, NC) to continue his training; his current research focuses on the selective recovery of rare earth elements from coal combustion residue leachate.
Research Interests
- Water Chemistry
- Heavy Metal Removal/Recovery
- Ion Exchange
- Desalination
