ABSTRACT: The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) is a mission-driven Research and Technology Organization (RTO) that develops advanced technologies and delivers innovative products and services to industry and society. As a major engine of the diversification and growth of Luxembourg’s economy through innovation, LIST supports the deployment of a number of solutions to a wide range of sectors, including energy, IT, telecommunications, environment, agriculture, and advanced manufacturing at national and European level. This is done by maximizing synergies with different actors, including universities, the national funding agency and industrial partners in the country and beyond.

Within the EH Group ecotoxicological and in vitro assays are developed and dedicated studies are performed. Most advanced are the developed complex 3D in vitro coculture systems. They are valuable tools to study biological processes at biological barriers in a more realistic way than in the classic mono-cell and mono-layer systems. Such 3D systems allow for example direct cell-cell interaction, cell migration, etc. that may affect cellular responses. In combination with modern systems biology approaches 3D in vitro co-culture systems are the next step to further replace in vivo experiments in drug development and toxicity studies and applications and results for (nano)particles will be presented.
